At your optimal level of energy, you feel good, positive, productive and not overwhelmed or burned out. However, as your energy exertion rate starts to rise and gets to a level farther from your optimal level of energy, individuals experience less success. At the extremely high levels of energy exertion people experience burnout because excessively high exertion cannot be sustained for long periods of time.
In these two energy questions, you will be asked to report your current or working energy along with the optimal level. This optimal number is different for everyone. The difference between working and optimal and variance over time are both critical indicators. Being part of the energy pulsing initiative helps you to understand your own energy and learn what you can do to stay "in the zone" or at your best. Think of your working energy and optimal levels like your body pulse, which focuses you on staying in your own personal target heart rate zone. You don't want to get to an anaerobic state, where you are using up too much oxygen and cannot sustain the level of exertion in your exercise routine. The same concept applies at work. Your goal is to stay near your own optimal energy, and in that way make the most of your "at work" workout.

Low energy = Not a lot of energy for work – can be disinterested, frustrated, tired from prior days, etc. You don’t have a lot of energy to give to work, and doing the work is not energizing you.
Medium energy = Feeling pretty good at work; getting things done; feeling balanced but not overly excited about things. The work is helping you maintain your energy flow.
High energy = The work is fun; have energy for work and the work is energizing you; have a good sense of accomplishment, have enough challenge to keep you going and moving forward.
Dangerously high energy level = You are exerting a high level of effort, and you feel you can't get everything done. That state is having a negative effect on your efficiency and personal well being. This level can't be sustained for long periods of time, and if you stay at this level for too long you will go into burnout and your energy level will dramatically drop.
